Road safety enforcement is essential to prevent crashes and save lives. The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety partners with local and national governments to adopt evidence-based policies and help ensure these policies are effectively enforced.
Our enforcement work centers on building the capacity of local road policing agencies and procuring necessary equipment for these agencies to implement best-practice enforcement operations.
By using recognized international best practices, the initiative partners, the Global Road Safety Partnership and International Association of Chiefs of Police, work to build and sustain high-quality policing activities for the improvement of road safety.
This is essential work to save lives and stop traffic-related injuries. Strengthening road policing deters drivers from engaging in dangerous behaviors like speeding and drinking and driving and encourages all drivers and passengers to wear seat-belts and motorcycle helmets.
This work is tailored to the cities and countries where the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety operates, giving flexibility to local police to create and apply policies.
Pairing with enforcement, effective communications campaigns play an important role to raise public awareness and change user behavior by motivating people about the harm of dangerous driving behavior.
The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety and its partners use our expertise to support national and local governments in creating strategic communication and mass media campaigns to raise public awareness of the key risk factors and facilitate change of user behavior. Each communications campaign is evaluated to improve subsequent campaigns.
The initiative partner, Vital Strategies, provides support to cities in developing strategic communication plans; conducting message testing for the campaign content to inform strategic messaging; producing effective audiovisual materials for campaigns, including products for TV and radio, social media and large format print; evaluating campaign outcomes; building capacity of local professionals; and conducting press conference and media events for PR purposes.
