Enhancing Data Collection & Surveillance

Strengthening road crash surveillance systems and using data to inform policy and action

Our Surveillance Work

The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety and its partners use our expertise to support national and local governments in strengthening road crash surveillance systems and using data to inform policy and action. We also produce technical reports for cities in collaboration with governments and partners from across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The purpose of these reports is to inform governments and road safety stakeholders on road safety risk factors within their cities, as well as to make specific, evidence-based recommendations.

Enhancing Surveillance Systems and Reporting

The initiative partners, the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit and Vital Strategies, provide support to cities in conducting observations of the focused risk factors, analyzing the collected data to inform strategic planning, developing road safety data units and implementing new police road crash data systems, producing comprehensive annual road safety reports, and linking police and hospital data sources to improve mortality estimates.
