Enhancing Vehicle Safety

Encouraging governments to mandate vehicle safety standards and driving demand for safer vehicles

Our Vehicle Safety Work

The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety and its partner provide a platform for co-operation among new car assessment programs worldwide and promote the universal adoption of the United Nation’s most important motor vehicle safety standards worldwide.

Democratizing Vehicle Safety

The Initiative partner, Global NCAP, supports the development of the New Car Assessment Programmes (NCAPs) in emerging markets and provides an independent source of vehicle safety information for consumers. Making the results of these crash tests publicly available encourages the manufacture of safer cars across the global automotive market and promotes accelerated use of vehicle safety technologies with proven effectiveness to prevent and mitigate crashes. The crash tests are designed to promote features that both mitigate the harm of a crash, like airbags, and prevent a crash from occurring at all, like electronic stability control. They also emphasize features that protect the car occupants as well as vulnerable road users outside the car, like pedestrians and bicyclists.
